My practice session started slow, with a 155 game, but I really had an “Aha!” moment in the 10th frame and, while not striking out to end it, I started the next game well, went a clean 237, then ended with a 224 that might have been in the 240s if not for a couple of single-pin misses. All told, it was a 616 series, which was even better than last week. I’m happy I’ve been practicing well…just need to bring that to league now. My league’s banquet is tonight, and I will have my phone with me, so I’m hoping I can post from the site (maybe including a photo or two).

SEATTLE (May 14, 2013) – The Professional Bowlers Association’s 2012-13 Player of the Year race may take a decisive turn during the final two weeks of May when four PBA Tour titles are decided during the GEICO PBA Summer Swing in the Milwaukee. With the Badger, Wolf, Bear and Milwaukee Open titles at stake in the Milwaukee series, a hotly-contested six-man race for PBA Player of the Year honors could quickly change in favor of one of the leading contenders. Or it could move a couple of dark horse candidates into position to challenge for the end-of-season honor. The Player of the Year will be selected in balloting by the PBA membership and members of the bowling news media at the close of the season. Key criteria most voters use are titles won, competition points, earnings, averages and television finals. Major titles won, or championship round appearances, are commonly factors that will tip the scales if voting is close. The 2012-13 Player of the Year competition will be based upon overall performance over an expanded 14-month campaign which began with the 2012 PBA World Series of Bowling IV and will conclude on Dec. 31, 2013, as the PBA heads toward a return to a traditional calendar year schedule beginning on Jan. 1, 2014. Heading into the GEICO PBA Summer Swing, the Player of the Year leaders, in alphabetical order, are: ? Jason Belmonte, Australia: won the 2013 USBC Masters for his only 2012-13 title, leads the PBA Tour in competition points and average (234.97), and ranks third in earnings ($131,586). Finished second in the PBA World Championship and PBA Tournament of Champions, and has three other TV appearances. ? Parker Bohn III, Jackson, NJ: won the 2012 PBA World Championship for his only 2012-13 title, ranks fifth in competition points, and seventh in earnings ($77,688) and average (228.91). He also finished fourth in the USBC Masters. ? Mika Koivuniemi, Finland/Hartland, MI: has won two 2012-13 titles, both on the PBA International Tour (Round1 Japan Cup and Qatar Open), ranks seventh in points, first in earnings ($158,412) and sixth in average (228.99). Koivuniemi also finished fifth in the USBC Masters. ? Scott Norton, Mission Viejo, CA: has won two 2012-13 titles (Chameleon Open and Earl Anthony PBA Players Championship), and ranks fourth in points, fifth in earnings ($87,970) and eighth in average (228.85). ? Sean Rash, Montgomery, IL: reigning PBA Player of the Year’s only title this season is Kuwait Open. He ranks third in points, second in earnings ($145,472) and third in average (232.58), and is tied with Belmonte with five TV appearances, including finishing third in PBA World Championship and PBA Tournament of Champions. ? Pete Weber, St. Ann, MO: won a PBA-record 10th major title in the PBA Tournament of Champions at age 50. Ranks 13th in points, sixth in earnings ($82,306) and fourth in average (229.97). Heading the “dark horse” list includes Tommy Jones of Simpsonville, SC, a one-time title winner in 2012-13 who ranks sixth in points and fourth in earnings, and non-winner Wes Malott of Pflugerville, Texas, who is second in points and average and eighth in earnings. Other players who have won one title during the 2012-13 season are Bill O’Neill, Langhorne, PA; Brad Angelo, Lockport, NY; Tom Daugherty, Wesley Chapel, FL; Andres Gomez, Colombia; Michael Haugen Jr., Carefree, AZ; Jason Sterner, McDonough, GA, and Ronnie Russell, Marion, IN. The GEICO PBA Summer Swing begins with the Badger Open May 19-21 at AMF Waukesha, followed by the Wolf Open May 22-24 at AMF West, Bear Open May 26-28 at AMF Bowlero, Milwaukee Open May 29-30 at Bowlero, and two days of CBS Sports Network stepladder finals June 1-2 at Bowlero. Thus far in 2012-13, the PBA Tour has conducted 16 individual tournaments in the United

Randy Pedersen made his PBA50 debut with a less-than-auspicious 144 in his first game. The only reason that's notable is because of how he finished: as the champion. Pedersen qualified third for the stepladder finals and defeated Mike Edwards in the first match. From there, he eliminated Bob Learn, Jr. to earn the right to face always-in-the-lead Amleto Monacelli. In a game that unsurprisingly came down to the 10th frame, Pedersen came out ahead, 232-226.

After starting qualifying dead last with a 144 game, and not bowling competitively for six years, winning the PBA50 Dayton Classic presented by Roto Grip was the furthest thing from PBA Hall of Famer Randy Pedersen’s mind. After his rough start, the 50-year-old color analyst for ESPN and CBS Sports Network PBA Tour telecasts rocketed through the field to win in his PBA50 Tour debut by defeating fellow Hall of Famer Amleto Monacelli, 232-226, in the championship match Thursday at Capri Lanes. “It was a combination of just bowling bad and maybe being on a tough pair of lanes,” Pedersen of his first game. “But after that I bowled a 240, then a 230 and thought, okay, things are getting better. “It was a combination of things,” he added. “I got some good advice, made the right ball choices and adjustments and then got a good sense pretty quickly for how the lanes were reacting and how I could adjust for it.” In the championship match, Pedersen won by striking on his first ball in the 10th frame on a light hit. “Amleto had lane choice and that left me finishing on the right lane which we both knew was the toughest,” Pedersen said, “but as the match progressed I thought, hey, even though it’s been 11 years since I’ve won, I remember how to do this, so I threw what I thought was a pretty good shot and got a lucky break with the high hit.” After winning a tournament he admitted to being a little reluctant about even entering, Pedersen plans to continue his PBA50 career by taking it tournament-by-tournament. He was a 13-time PBA Tour winner during a 25-year career (1981-2006-07). Knee injuries after the 2006-07 season and two subsequent surgeries led to his retirement. Qualifying third for the stepladder finals, Pedersen defeated 2012 USBC Senior Masters winner Mike Edwards of Tulsa, 244-191, in the opening match and then defeated Pasco County Suncoast Open winner Bob Learn Jr. of Erie, Pa., 268-223, in the semifinal. Throughout the 2013 PBA50 Tour season, players are competing for the opportunity to advance to the nationally-televised PBA50 Tour Finals which will be conducted as part of the World Series of Bowling V in Las Vegas in November. The top three players in points at the conclusion of the season will advance to the PBA50 Tour Finals. The top three after five tournaments this season are Walter Ray Williams Jr., Bob Learn Jr., and Lennie Boresch Jr. The PBA50 Tour takes a short break but will return for the season’s two majors in Las Vegas. The Suncoast PBA Senior U.S. Open presented by Storm will be conducted June 2-7 at the Suncoast Bowling Center and the USBC Senior Masters June 9-14 at the South Point Bowling Center. 447 series (149 ppg)They say hindsight is 20/20 and I can vouch to the accuracy of that saying.I shouldn't have bowled on Monday or Wednesday this week. Gout in my left knee resurfaced and I was unable to bend it much, let alone slide.Yeah, I'm a stubborn one but my teammates were gracious throughout it all; not once did they suggest that I sit out and give the team a better chance to win some points. So I bowled badly, a 447 set on Monday and a 480 set on Wednesday. If it wasn't for my knee, I would've pegged my poor performance on tiredness. A smarter man would've skipped the summer leagues, for once, and come back recharged in the fall. But no, not this guy.We have our payout and no tap fun stuff tomorrow. Immediately following that will be the monthly no tap tournament I usually bowl in. What's the bet yours truly is gonna be stupid again tomorrow?
