In the Largehearted Word series, the staff of Brooklyn's WORD bookstore highlights several new books released this week. WORD is an independent neighborhood bookstore in Greenpoint, the northernmost neighborhood of Brooklyn, that recently celebrated its sixth anniversary. Our primary goal is to be whatever our community needs us to be, which currently means carrying a lot of paperback fiction (especially classics), cookbooks, board books, and absurdly cute cards and stationery. In addition, we're fiends for a good event, from the classic author reading and Q&A to potlucks and a basketball league (and anything set in a bar). We're a small operation, just 1000 square feet and four people, but we read too much, so it all works out. If a weekly dose of WORD here isn't enough for you, follow us on Twitter: @wordbookstores. WORD also hosts the monthly Largehearted Lit reading series, featuring authors who participated in this blog's Book Notes series and musical guests. Dog Songs by Mary Oliver A must read for dog lovers, a must read for poetry lovers, and especially a must read for those who love both. The Circle by Dave Eggers CJ says: This very timely novel follows Mae Holland, a young woman who has been hired to work at The Circle, a Google-like company based in California. What initially seems to be a dream job quickly becomes Mae's entire life, and her privacy becomes a thing of the past. I raced through this novel. Eggers has written a suspenseful, creepy story, and I love the places he is going as a writer. The Best American Infographics 2013 edited by Gareth Cook New to the Best American series, the infographics included in this book contain information about everything from the Breaking Bad body count to the most common birthdays. The Twelve Tribes of Hattie by Ayana Mathis Told in twelve threads from the perspectives of Hattie's children, this novel reveals an original, compelling version of the American dream, with all its hope and disappointment illuminated. In a new interview with Out Magazine, Josh Hutcherson, who stars as Peeta in The Hunger Games, made an interesting claim about his sexuality. Instead of opting for a definitive statement of heterosexuality, the handsome twenty-one year old came out with something a little more nuanced.   Out Magazine reports: We’ve barely started lunch, and I’m nowhere near my usual open-ended sexuality question, when Josh Hutcherson offers this: “I would probably list myself as mostly straight.” That “mostly” is what makes Hutcherson winningly uninhibited, but also typical of his generation. New research published in The New York Times in 2010 shows that an increasing number of guys his age identify as “mostly straight,” and Hutcherson’s ease in embracing ambiguity over neat and secure boxes speaks to his self-assurance. “Maybe I could say right now I’m 100% straight,” he says. “But who knows? In a fucking year, I could meet a guy and be like, Whoa, I’m attracted to this person.” Hutcherson grew up in Union, Ky., a small town close to the Ohio border, and his slouchy, chill California vibe is still tinged with a soft Southern accent. Everything he says sounds easygoing. “I’ve met guys all the time that I’m like, Damn, that’s a good-looking guy, you know?” he says. “I’ve never been, like, Oh, I want to kiss that guy. I really love women. But I think defining yourself as 100% anything is kind of near-sighted and close-minded.” Of course, Hutcherson is also an ally to the LGBT community and has been for some time. He co-founded the Straight but Not Narrow campaign which encourages other heterosexual youngsters to stand up in support of their gay peers. It is certainly nice to have a youthful Hollywood star in our court--perhaps one day he'll even play for our team. The Javelinas dropped the AFL opener yesterday in Surprise. Cory Spangenberg went 1-for-5 with a double and a run scored while Austin Hedges went 2-for-4. Unfortunately, Adys Portillo didn't have a great day on the mound when he came in to pitch the 6th inning. After loading the bases with two outs, he went behind 3-1 in the count to Saguaros hitter Mitch Haniger and then gave up a grand slam to the left fielder to put Surprise up 7-3. The Javs got two more runs in the 8th inning to close the gap and then Hedged led off the 9th with a single, but the run never came home and the Saguaros held on for the 7-6 victory. Today the Javs host the Saguaros in Peoria. Tommy Medica, batting in the 3-spot and playing first base, is the lone Padres representative in the starting lineup today. The game is already underway, scoreless in the 1st, and you can follow along with Gameday.

For Slate, illustrator Jess Fink created a map called “United Sports of America” which attempts to answer the question: “If every state in the union had to choose an official sport, what would they pick?” The map is interactive and a full list of each state’s sports is provided at Slate. Personally, I was particularly charmed that cornhole is listed as Ohio’s sport. Thanks Frank Jones!
