Curl BC’s newest governor is Paul Addison from Victoria.   The long-time curler was voted in for a two-year term by the Curl BC membership at the AGM on Sunday, June 9, 2013. He is Curl BC’s first Governor at Large, meaning that he will sit on the board, but he will not represent a particular region. Three candidates stood for the position, including 2012-13 board member George Horner from Penticton and Jim Skrenek, a volunteer with the British Columbia Interior Masters Curling Association and the Vernon Curling Club. Paul is a past president of the Glen Meadows Curling Association, as well as a coach and competitive masters curler. He said he was delighted to have been selected for the role. “I start with a very positive attitude,” he said, admitting that he had once been “grumpy” with Curl BC in the past because he felt the organization concentrated too much on the competitive curler. But he now sees that there is a lot on offer for the average curler and local curling centres. “I have found a lot of the focus is now on how to provide those background skills and knowledge needed to run a successful club. That is what I am interested in,” he said. Paul added he was looking forward to helping to shape the role of the Governor at Large because the role was so new. Curl BC would like to thank all the Governor at Large candidates for running in this year’s elections. The board for the 2013-14 season can be viewed at http://curlbc.ca/about/board/. Many thanks to outgoing board members Liz Goldenberg, Jim Day, Ross Johnson, Mel Lungle and George Horner. Next year, two more Governors at Large will be selected so the board will eventually have three Governors at Large at all times. If anyone would like to get ahold of Paul, he can be reached at pauladdison@shaw.ca.

A long-time BC curler and volunteer has died. Ken McLeod, a Curl BC Life Member, passed away on Monday, June 10. Ken was president of the Pacific Coast Curlers Association in 1976 and was selected to be a life member in 1996. He was a member of the Richmond Curling Club and volunteered within the sport for many years. He was quite involved when the Macdonald Brier came to Vancouver in 1978. Former Curl BC president Wayne Braun said: “He was a very good volunteer for the old club on Cambie Road [Richmond Curling Club's old location] and the new club. He was a good old fellow.” A memorial service will be held on Monday, June 17, at 3pm, at the Richmond Funeral Home on 8470 Cambie Road, Richmond.

Curl BC would like to extend a big “thank you” to everyone who attended the Curl BC Business of Curling Symposium from June 7 to 9 and the AGM on June 9. It was a very successful event, attended by curling delegates from across the province. Seminars and workshops covered a wide range of topics, including liquor licensing, grant writing, ice-making, social media, energy saving and having an effective board of governors. Elisabeth Walker-Young, Curl BC’s Educational Programs Manager, said: “What I saw was a lot of curling centres sharing ideas and best practices. From ways to thank volunteers after larger events to larger capacity issues like the best solution for power plants for ice making. “Sharing went on during and after presentations. For example, after learning about energy saving, Christine Dubois from Invermere revealed their centre shared their power plant with the hockey facility across the road. ‘The system is built under the road and we share the costs’, she told another club who is facing the financial and logistical issues involved with upgrading or replacing their power plant. “I think this sharing of ideas was one of the largest successes of the 2013 Business of Curling Symposium.” Elisabeth added: “We also invited representatives from curling clubs to play active roles on various panels and presentations. The feedback was very positive. It gave other delegates ‘real’ examples of what worked, how it worked and what some hiccups were. As a result, for future years, Curl BC will look to implement more of these co-facilitated sessions.” For the first time, Curl BC Annual Award winners were honoured at a special banquet on Saturday night, which was also well received. It was a great weekend to celebrate a great sport! Visit our Facebook page to see photos from the banquet and don’t forget to sign in and ”like” Curl BC. Stay tuned for more updates from the weekend.

The Sandra Schmirler Foundation today announced the successful applicants for the Spirit of Sandra $5,000 junior curling scholarships. “The response from young competitive curlers across Canada was incredible”, said Theresa Breen, Foundation Chair. “The Board was very impressed with the applicants and their outstanding achievements in academics, competitive sport and community involvement”. This is the inaugural year for the $5,000 scholarships which will be funded annually through crowd sweeps at Season of Champions championships. “The Foundation is indebted to the Canadian Curling Association for providing this opportunity for competitive curlers to engage with fans at major curling events and collect money to fund this new initiative”, stated Breen. The 2013 Spirit of Sandra Scholars are: Jocelyn Peterman from Red Deer, Alberta; Kristen Streifel from Clavet, Saskatchewan; Shannon Birchard and Derek Oryniak both from Winnipeg, Manitoba; Matthew Smith from Keewatin, Ontario; and Cathlia Ward from Fredericton, New Brunswick. Cathlia was the alternate for Team Brown, from Kamloops, when the junior girls travelled to Sochi, Russia, for the 2013 Junior World Curling Championships. In addition to the financial support these Scholars will receive, they will also be mentored by world championship curlers, Jon Mead and Cathy Overton-Clapham who have volunteered their time to help these young curlers realize their own dreams. “Jon and I are thrilled to be able to work with this very talented group of young competitive curlers”, said Cathy. “We hope that together we can help them to build their competitive skills while balancing curling with school”, added Jon. The six Scholars will join Cathy and Jon in Winnipeg in August for a 2-day training session. Each of the Scholars has committed to organizing a fundraiser in their local community to build awareness and raise money to support the mission of the Sandra Schmirler Foundation: to donate to Neonatal Intense Care Units (NICUs) in hospitals across Canada for the purchase of life-saving equipment for babies too soon, too small or too sick. Two of the applicants for the Spirit of Sandra Scholarships were born premature and spent time in a NICU at their local hospitals.
