How many pieces of clothing do you own? Via Shutterstock A friend recently mentioned that her roommate owned 60 pairs of jeans. 60! Apparently, they started counting while packing the apartment in preparation for a big move. I was stunned. Is it possible to own 60 pairs of jeans?! But before I judge my friend’s roommate (it may be too late) I decided to count everything in my own closet. Here is my inventory of my entire wardrobe, including summer, winter, sporty, and any maternity clothes I have not gotten rid of. How many pairs of jeans do you own? Bottoms Jeans – 3 Cords – 2 Slacks – 3 Capris – 2 Shorts – 4 Skirts – 9 Jumper – 1 Tops T-shirts (including tank tops, long sleeve, and short sleeve) – 47 Fancy tops – 13 Dresses – 18 (including my junior prom dress) Warm Stuff Sweaters (including cardigans, zip ups, vests and one faux leopard print shoulder wrap) – 20 Jackets – 14 Coats – 4 Scarves – 5 Shoes Shoes – 6 Cleats and sport shoes – 3 Boots – 5 Sandals and Heels – 14 Sport clothes (biking, swimming, yoga, volleyball, hiking, running) Shorts – 8 Tops – 14 Long sleeve tops – 2 Wind breaker – 1 Bottoms – 7 Swimsuits – 2.5 (not sure where those bikini bottoms went!) Sport bras – 4 Skort – 1 Misc. Socks – 16 Underwear – 13 Bras – 9 Pajamas – 15 Camisole – 1 Robes – 3 Tights – 4 A breakdown of the categories above, as a percentage of my closet. Tops are 29%. Misc. items are 23%. Sporty clothes are 15%. Warm stuff is 14.5%. Shoes are 10%. Bottoms are 8.5%. How many pieces of clothing do I own? Unless I have another pair of jeans hiding under the bed (I made sure to count everything in the dirty laundry basket), this adds up to 269.5 items of clothing. That’s a lot more than I thought! I can no longer think of myself as someone who doesn’t buy a lot of clothes. Because clearly I do! Whether I acquired the clothing through gifts, at a thrift shop, or purchased new (with a coupon, I dare say!), the sheer number of clothing items – 269 and that half bikini – strike me as way too many. Why do I have so many clothes? Does owning so many clothes cost me money? I refuse to buy anything that requires ironing, so no time or money lost there. Few of my sweaters are ever dry cleaned, less than 3 a year, I’d estimate. So that cost is negligible. But you could argue that my clothes take up space, and with fewer clothes I would be comfortable in a smaller, cheaper house. You could also argue that so many clothes take up mental space, prolonging the daily chore of deciding what to wear. (I suspect fashionistas don’t consider this a chore, but an opportunity.) More importantly… Does owning a certain amount of clothes make you want to own even more? If you have the “perfect” cocktail dress, does it make you more likely to spend money to acquire the “perfect” pair of heels to go with? Does having one pair of black boots make you yearn for a pair in brown? I once worked for a musician who was a minimalist. His entire wardrobe consisted of the following items, purchased at The Gap (this was the 90s, so you can imagine how plain they were). Four pairs of tan khakis, a half dozen white crew cut T-shirts, and a handful of light blue jean button down long sleeve shirts. He never wasted time deciding what to wear in the morning – and he never spent money buying more clothes. Another thing that surprised me about taking inventory of my closets. It only took 15 minutes! What’s in your closet?

Gift buying is supposed to be one of the greater joys in life. Not only is it good karma, gift-giving is your chance to be funny, thoughtful, or just plain awesome! But with a tight economy and tech gifts that can blow your budget in one fell swoop, finding the right gift for a good price can seem like an existential nightmare. Add to this the inherent difficulty of shopping for guys, and you can see the dilemma we have on our hands. But, rest assured, there are some really great, inexpensive gifts for guys out there…. New and Unique If you want to have a little fun, it’s always great to buy a gift that is unique, or new to the market. RealSimple.com offers over a dozen different ideas for unique gifts guys will love! Just a few: -Swipe tie: Silk tie with micro fiber lining that’s perfect for shining a tablet or phone -Fun leather trimmed needlepoint flask covers -Hygiene spa kits just for men! -Solar crank radio -60 Years of Mad Magazine (book) -Funky zig-zag corkscrew -Knotz cuff links -Games like ‘Rock Me Archimedes’ -Laser putter -Opena case: an iPhone case with a bottle opener in it -‘How To’ magic or mind reading tricks These are just a few fun ideas for guys, and most of them are only $40 or less. Anything that is functional AND fashionable is a good bet. And don’t be afraid to buy something that is just fun, like a paintball set, or a new bowling ball! Gift Baskets The words “gift basket” conjure up images of bows, baby showers, and scented bath soaps. But you can also put together gift baskets that are great for guys. With Father’s Day around the corner, it’s time to start thinking about the kinds of snacks and treats your dad likes. This can include everything from beef jerky to a chocolate covered strawberries. Inexpensive Father’s Day gift baskets treat dad to gourmet sweets and savories, nuts, wines, gift cards and even golf sets. Good Reads Depending on the guy you’re buying for, books and magazines can be terrific gifts, especially a magazine subscription. That may be something he would enjoy, but not really think of for himself, and even better, it’s a gift that will keep giving all year round. Huffingtonpost.com writer Jason Pinter wrote an article in 2010 strongly dispelling the myth that men don’t read. Guys love to learn about historical figures, sports heroes, and you can’t go wrong with spy thrillers either. Some recommended reading: Magazines: Men’s Health, Esquire, GQ, Men’s Fitness, Details, Complex, Men’s Journal, Muscle and Fitness, Backpacker, Travel and Leisure, Motor Trend Books: Evil Star, The Dead of Night, Satch and Me, Marlfox, Sea Wolf, My Father’s Dragon, Thirteen Days to Midnight, Code Talker, Title Shot, Empire of Gut and Bone And to get the best deal on these literary buys, do some comparison shopping. Look for online deals, or check out Amazon.com for great prices. See, you don’t have to go broke to do something really nice for the important men in your life. Just be realistic about the kinds of things they enjoy and the kinds of gifts you can afford.

It takes a lot of time and energy to become a smart shopper because you have to understand how the system works at the grocery store before you can take advantage of it. There are a lot of great tips out there (and on this blog!) based on our collective experience as shoppers. ShopPerk, a mobile site that helps you save money on groceries, looked at the data and had some surprising insights to share. Here are a few things to keep in mind the next time you go grocery shopping. 1. Some stores have more deals than others. This is a handy thing to keep in mind when you need to make unplanned trips to the grocery store, but want to give yourself a better chance to save money. It’s also interesting to note that the top three stores consistently have more items on sale than the others. 2. Junk food is always on sale. Candy, prepared foods, and snacks are the categories that consistently have the most deals. However, this does not mean it’s impossible to eat healthy on a budget. It’s still cheaper to make you meals from scratch with fresh foods that are on sale. 3. Just because it’s on sale, doesn’t mean its a good deal. This is a big surprise because we typically assume that if something is on sale, that it’s a safe and smart decision to buy it. We found that this happens a lot with fresh meats: ground beef, chicken breasts, etc. So the next time you’re at the store, remember to double check the price tag to make sure it’s a good deal. ShopPerk is a web app that helps you find deals on groceries in your area. You can also figure out what to make with those items and create a shopping list. We build ShopPerk to make it easy to save money and avoid some of these pitfalls at the grocery stores. Sign up to be one of the first people to try ShopPerk for free.
