Rarely a week goes by without Tim Tebow making headlines. Is Tebow a free agent again? Will he be drafted by any of the top NFL teams this time around? Awww no, did New England Patriots cut him from the team? This soon? Unbelievable! And then there is Tebow’s personal life. His miraculous birth in the face of all odds. His deeply religious mother was told it was likely that Tebow was going to be stillborn. But she never lost faith in God and her prayers were heard. This means the charismatic and deeply Christian man has been fighting against all odds from day one. Literally. By now, almost every living, breathing, red blooded American is aware of Tebowing, the passionately religious show-it-to-the-whole-world prayer mode on the field, that fills Tebow’s fans’ heart with faith, confidence and passion, and his haters’ hearts with rage and anxiety. But there is another aspect of Tebow’s life which never fails to make internet gossip world alight with rapture. Who is going to be that special someone to capture Tebow’s heart and be his beautiful bride? Is buxom brunette Lucy Pinder the love of his life? Is Lindsey Vonn, the alpine ski world champion, bristling with feminine energy and allure, the one? Is Tebow’s heart taken by the gorgeous Hollywood cutie Camille Belle? At the end of the day, none of the rumors, purported relationships, dalliances have so far demonstrated any staying power. Tebow’s female fans count their blessings every night before going to bed that he is still single and available. But God has a plan for Tebow, and if reports from Russia are to be taken seriously, then that plan is about to take Tebow all the way to Moscow with a promised $1 million touchdown in his bank account. Tebow hasn’t made his decision on the Russian offer yet, so keep your fingers crossed. But make no mistake, if the plan does materialize, the American heartthrob with all the tebowing on the field might not make a dent on Russian relationship with Assad’s Syria, but its a sure bet he will cause his eager female Russian fans to swoon with joy, devotion and desire. And if the stars are all aligned in Tim’s favor, he might return this Christmas, from Russia with love, and a future full of children and the joy of fatherhood. [images from twitter]

For the last few days we have been bombarded with words that appear 'peaceful' and problem-solving from Russia with love. Of course, 'no change' benefits mother Russia the most as his government's gas revenues (and political power) will continue to flow from Europe (a quarter of Russian government income comes from being Europe's gas supplier). So it will come as no surprise that amid the Mother Theresa acts, The Telegraph reports that Putin is readying delivery of more S-300 air-defense missile systems to Iran and will continue to discuss "working together in the nuclear energy spehere." Combine that with experts' views that Russia's plan to dismantle Syria's stockpiles of mustard gas, sarin, VX nerve agents is a long shot; initially "sounding attractive, but very quickly, operational problems could derail obtaining international control, much less actually destroying the arsenal." It would appear, despite all the chatter, that Putin is increasing his power-base in the region. Iran-Aid (via The Telegraph), President Hassan Rouhani is set to meet Putin on the sidelines of a summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation held in Kyrgyzstan on Friday, in the newly-elected centrist cleric's first meeting with a major world leader. The Kommersant business daily reported Wednesday that Putin will offer to supply Iran S-300 air defence missile systems as well as build a second reactor at the Bushehr nuclear plant. The S-300 offer would be a particularly contentious development given it would essentially revive a contract for similar missile systems that Russia cancelled in 2010 after heavy Israeli and US pressure. Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Kommersant that Putin and Rowhani were expected to discuss "working together in the nuclear energy sphere" and "questions of military technical cooperation" at the summit in Bishkek. Chemical Weapons Decomissioning ain't gonna happen (via WSJ). Of course, the practicalities of dismantling and storing these weapons is hugely problematic. Carrying out Russia's plan to dismantle Syria's stockpiles of mustard gas and sarin and VX nerve agents is viewed as a long shot by many diplomats, top experts and current and former U.S. officials. "The Russian proposal sounds attractive, but very quickly, operational problems could derail obtaining international control, much less actually destroying the arsenal," said Amy Smithson, an expert on chemical weapons at the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies in Washington, D.C. ... Syria's chemical-weapons arsenal has been developed and stored in at least eight sites across the Arab country. Many of the missiles and artillery pieces are believed to have been moved since civil war broke out in 2011, according to current and former U.S. officials. ... A U.S. official cast doubt about how any deal to strip Mr. Assad of his weapons could be verified. "That is a problem," the official said. "How verifiable does it need to be? Getting 50% or 60% of the chemical weapons is not good enough. We would have to get 90% to 95%." ... Mr. Assad's arsenal is significantly larger than Col. Gadhafi's was. And many experts don't believe the Syrian leader intends to give up his weapons, in part, because his government is still at war. "The Libyans basically decided to show us everything," said Ms. DeSutter. "I can't believe this will be the case with the Syrians." and by way of background - why Putin will defend this side of the game... (via Golem XIV's blog), European Energy dependence Europe needs gas. Russia has it. Only Norway provides more gas to Europe (35% versus 34%). As Europe continues to rely more heavily on gas, as it will especially if Germany does phase out its nuclear reactors, then Russia will, unless something changes, become the number one supplier. Europe also depends on Russia for 27% of its oil imports, 24% of its coal imports, 30% of its Uranium imports and Russia is the third largest supplier of Europe’s

Submitted by Ben Tanosborn of Tanosborn.com, I caught a glimpse of Sean Connery on TV late Monday afternoon at Ashe Stadium as the unequalled “James Bond” watched the unequalled two giants of today’s men tennis, Rafa and Novak, battle for supremacy at the US Open Tennis championship in New York. I couldn’t help but recall how 50 years before (1963) Connery was filming his 2nd JB movie which I saw at its release a year later. A great win for Rafa Nadal at Flushing Meadows yesterday; a great Cold War movie with Connery a half-century before; and great news circulating on the possibility of defusing the crisis in Syria with an anti-embarrassment gift to Obama: “From Russia with Love.” Incredibly, the question being asked this past weekend throughout the US media had been: will Americans’ representatives in Congress vote to support the president’s wish to punish Bashar al-Assad (Syria, really!), or will their votes follow their constituents’ wishes at home against armed intervention? Asking this question seems embarrassingly obscene, to both morality and democracy, and most of us cringe at the thought of these pusillanimous representatives and senators we have in Congress making such a decision. A collection of wealth-power seekers who have made, or are making, a personal career out of a sacred position of trust bestowed by the people in their districts or states on them… making a decision based on a canon of morality they lack! Granted that there is a minority of honorable people among those 535 folks… fewer than a hundred, for sure; but the rest, resoundingly most people, agree the nation would be better off if all burn at the stake – party affiliation inconsequential in our two-party illusory democracy. True progressives in the United States have been cutting way, way too much slack for President Barack Obama from his first day in the White House in just about every area… giving way to pseudo-moderation and compromise, perhaps in hopes of strengthening his hand for the performance of future good deeds. Instead, progressives have continued to perpetuate the cover-up for politicians who use articulation of progressive causes for their own personal gain. It became obvious in military matters in Obama’s early decision on Afghanistan (2009) to demonstrate solidarity with the brass at the Pentagon; and we saw how a man presumably representing peace and diplomacy had cowed to the hawks in both Congress and the Pentagon. Now, this president of ours, a stellar figure in jurisprudence and constitutional law, has decided to both, rewrite the law and promote leadership via “authoritative diplomacy.” Shouldn’t a trial and guilty-verdict precede the sentencing phase? Do we really wish to appear before the world not as a global leader, but as a global bully? Is Barack Obama intent in making Syria the US’ next lesson in a nonsensical course of Amoral Morality? Has panic strike the cool and collected man at the White House for him to resort to a partner in crime: Congress? For eons Americans have had an overwhelming majority of self-serving and arrogant legislators represent them in Congress; that’s fact and punishment of undemocratic US politics resulting from the elective-power – campaign funds, doled out by special interests to keep once-elected legislators in perpetual power. Now, Americans are finally discovering that they have a pusillanimous president inhabiting the White House as well; a president who’s trying to whitewash his personal embarrassment, a consequence of a stupid, needless act of cockiness… when he drew an unnecessary line in the sand. Obama’s metamorphosis never ceases to amaze me: from Senator Obama, Peacemaker; to President-elect Obama, Pacifying-Warrior; to this latest phase: Pusillanimous-Warrior trying to find refuge in illegitimate consent from Congress, when its constituency, even after an interminable barrage of propaganda from the government, is polled to be 60 percent against the US taking war a

You probably thought Bleeding Cool were crazy when they went from being an online only operation to launching a print magazine, but as it happens, it worked out. Brilliantly. People like paper, it seems. Will Jones knows this too. He’s the chap behind Kill You Last, a photocopied, one-man-band fanzine about action movies. I’m rather taken with it, so I asked Jones to write us something. So here he is, explaining why he makes the effort when, really, blogspot would have been so much easier. I’ve scattered a few pages up and down this post too, just to show something of what was in the earlier issues. Action movies are bloody brilliant, aren’t they? So brilliant, I about a year ago I started a fanzine called Kill You Last about them. It think it’s ok. Apparently Brendon does as well. Ok, I remember being little – I mean really little – watching From Russia With Love. I don’t remember much of it but I remember I thought it was absolutely incredible. Bond was this super-crazy guy who had shootouts and speedboat chases and beat up guys on trains. But then I remember that there was a bit where Bond wasn’t kicking the crap out of Russians. Instead he was – as Alan Partridge put it – with a lady. And 5 year old me was all like “What the hell is this? Why the hell isn’t he shooting people or punching people or chasing people in speedboats?” I clearly remember asking my parents why on earth they put bits in the films that weren’t action scenes – why put any of those plot and mushy love scenes and other stuff in there, when all we want is the action, and when it’s not action, we’re all just hanging about waiting, wondering when we’ll get back to the action? And ok, I’m older now, and I have a degree in Film Studies and in work in the film industry, and I now appreciate the work of Felini and Spike Lee and Greta Gerwig and whoever. But I still think the best thing you can do is film a brilliant action sequence. Look, I’ll put it this way. I can explain to you why The Godfather or Vertigo are brilliant, and yeah, it’s not the same as watching it, but you’d sort of get a lot from it. But what if I tried to explain the foot chase from Point Break? Er, Keanu Reeves runs after Patrick Swayze. That’s it really. The brilliance of it comes from the synthesis of moving images and sound, the editing, the camera angles, the music, the actual motion. I’d argue that it’s pure cinema – it is something that cannot be done in any other medium. To me it’s the definition of everything Sergei Eisenstein stood for, what takes cinema from static shots of workers leaving a factory to montage theory. But Sergei Eisenstein is old and Russian and communist so he’s treated as a genius. But action movies don’t get that respect. The best acknowledgement that ‘serious’ cineastes will give mainstream American cinema is an ironic hat tip, call it a ‘guilty pleasure’, or worst of all, say it’s something you ‘just turn your brain off’ during. Well screw that. Action movies are not a lesser form of entertainment. They require the highest form of skill and technique to make. Yes, Renny Harlin might not be able to make Mullhoalland Drive, but I honestly don’t reckon David Lynch could direct a decent car chase either. Action films display the work of incredibly talented choreographers, stunt men, second unit directors, special effects artists and a host of other talents that deserve just as much respect. So I started writing a fanzine about them. I wanted to read something where intelligent people wrote about action, not from the point of a sneering academic looking down on the populist trash of the hoi polloi, but because they loved them. I couldn’t really find anyone doing that, so I started a fanzine for it myself. I think I know about films. I might not. I might be an idiot. But honestly enjoy Bruce Willis jump

Current Earnings: $14,626,911,942 ?Secrets Of Its Success: There have been gadgets, double entendres and mystifyingly kazoo-soundtracked set-pieces. Beautiful women, cat-stroking villains and, as The West Wing’s Jed Bartlett pointed out, an iconic cocktail that’s actually not as cool as it sounds. But, whether played by aloof Connery, smirking Moore or brooding Craig, the one constant in this staggeringly successful franchise, and its most important ingredient, is 007 himself. Ian Fleming’s creation epitomises style, class, heroism and masculinity. Audiences don’t care whether 007’s clashing with Soviet counter-intelligence agencies, metal-mouthed giants or megalomaniacs – they want escapism in the company of a debonair hero who can punch the baddie and get the girl. The franchise may have been through six actors and adapted to each generation but Bond, and everything adventurous and sophisticated that he represents, endures.   Source (correct as of June 24, 2013)
