I collected baseball cards when I was younger, but never stamps. However, Ive been frequenting the United States Post Office as of late (to mail out Haitian Coffee that I import: shameless plug, visit www.Trezodhaiti.com)  and my eyes were caught with the announcement of the Johnny Cash Limited-Edition Forever Stamps. Well, the John the Baptist waiting is over – I was there today and in seems that the stamps just arrived yesterday (June 5): “What they hell, why not?” I thought, and now I have a sheet of Johnny Cash stamps that are cool (but I have no idea what I will do with em. Ill probably stick em in a book, forget about them and then in 5 years Ill see em again and say “O cool, look at these cool Johnny Cash stamps” and then probably put em back in the book until my kid stumbles upon them after Ive gone the way of the buffalo and the y will keep doing the same and so their offspring until they end up on the Antique Roadshow and then reference this posting as proof of authenticity, hey Antique Roadshow guys – they are real!!!!). Anyways, here’s the info for all you geeks: The United States Postal Service, John Carter Cash and other members of the Cash family celebrate the legacy of the Man in Black with the release of a limited-edition Johnny Cash Forever stamp June 5, 2013 at Ryman Auditorium (116 Fifth Avenue, Nashville) at 10:30 a.m. CDT. Doors open for stamp sales at 9 a.m. and the event is free and open to the public. Artists set to appear, perform or speak at the first-day-of-issuance ceremony include John Carter Cash, Carlene Carter, Larry Gatlin, Jamey Johnson, The Oak Ridge Boys, The Roys, Marty Stuart and Randy Travis among others.  650AM WSM personality Bill Cody will serve as emcee of the event. “It is an amazing blessing that my father Johnny Cash be honored with the issue of this stamp. Dad was a hard-working man, a man of dignity. As much as anything else, he was a proud American, always supporting his family, fans and country. I can think of no better way to pay due respect to his legacy than through the release of this stamp,” said John Carter Cash. “My family is thrilled that my father will grace a United States ‘Forever’ stamp, a great honor for any American, and an honor that would have particularly delighted him. It is a joy to know that generations will use this stamp, and my father will forever be where he loved to be: traveling the world,” added Rosanne Cash. About the Limited-Edition Johnny Cash Forever Stamp Designed by art director Greg Breeding, the Johnny Cash stamp features a photograph captured by Frank Bez during the photo session for Ring of Fire: The Best of Johnny Cash (1963).  The stamp is part of the U.S. Postal Service’s Music Icon series, which also includes stamps honoring Lydia Mendoza (available now)  and Ray Charles (to be released in September). The stamps will be available for purchase at the Ryman Auditorium June 5 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m., at the CMA Festival Fan Fair X at LP Field June 6-9, local Post Offices and online at usps.com/stamps.

Johnny Cash still has a devoted fanbase ten years after his death, and now his legacy is being honored with a postage stamp designed to look like an album cover. “The committee selects individuals to be on stamps based on accomplishments in their fields, and Cash was a natural fit,” Postal Service spokesman Mark Saunders said. “He has a huge following, and extends from country to rock ‘n’ roll to rhythm and blues.” The stamp goes on sale Wednesday, and a celebration of Cash’s life and work will take place at Ryman Auditorium the same day which will culminate in a concert featuring John Carter Cash, Tommy Cash and Joanne Cash Yates, Randy Travis, Marty Stuart, Larry Gatlin and The Oak Ridge Boys. Jamey Johnson and The Roys. Cash’s family approves of the stamp, saying it fits in well with the way they remember the legend. “It just truly embodies my father’s spirit, who he was,” John Carter Cash said. “It’s different. That’s one thing: It stands out to me as being unique. It’s very commanding when you see the stamp.” The stamps, which are limited edition, are expected to be a big hit for the USPS. The agency has had its share of troubles in recent years owing to a decline in its customer base now that so many people are using internet-based services, but Saunders has hopes that stamps like this one will make at least a small change for the better. “We hope that people will buy these stamps and use them,” he said. “Hopefully they will promote letter writing and stamp collecting.”

Country musician Larry Wayne Gatlin turns 65 today, which is pretty much all the excuse I need to run this clip here. If you stick around long enough the Gatlin Brothers play "All The Gold In California," but I am mainly putting it up to remind (or inform) you that this is what America was once like, and there weren't a whole lot of other options if you weren't into it. It's a funny old world. (Younger readers who are completely baffled might find some clarity here, but it's not going to explain everything.)---See more posts by Alex Balk1 comments
