It's been thirteen years since Patty Griffin recorded Silver Bell, an album that became lost in the throes of record label reorganizing and the ever-evolving recording industry. Some of the songs she recorded on the disc have long since been released on live recordings or included on other albums; others have been recorded by other artists (i.e. two by the Dixie Chicks alone). And now, at last, Silver Bell is being made available in its full, original recording glory, the way it was originally intended as her follow-up to Flaming Red back at the turn of the Century. We'd like to give away a copy to three lucky ND community members.  To enter to win a copy of the album on either CD or vinyl (your choice), simply comment on this post telling us what your favorite Patty Griffin song is, and why. Anyone can enter, but the prize(s) can only be shipped to a US address.   Post your comment/entry as a comment on this blog post. To comment on this post and enter the contest, scroll to the bottom of this page and leave your comment in the comment field. Clicking on the "+add" button at the top of this page will create a completely separate blog post that we will have to delete. Entries will not be accepted via separate blog post, Facebook, or Twitter. The contest will close at 11:59 p.m. PST on Monday, Oct. 7. So, good luck!  Here's some more info about the record, from a press release:  Silver Bell features 14 original songs recorded at Daniel Lanois’ Kingsway Studio in New Orleans by Griffin on vocals, guitar and piano with guitarist Doug Lancio, keyboardist John Deaderick, bassist Frank Swart, and percussionist Billy Beard. Emmylou Harris also joined Griffin in the studio to sing harmony on “Truth #2.” Despite its 13 years of limbo, the sought-after album spawned two huge hits for the Dixie Chicks, who covered both “Top Of The World” and “Truth #2” for their six-million-selling 2002 Home album. In addition, the band’s Natalie Maines recorded Silver Bell’s title track for her recent solo debut, Mother. Through the years, Griffin’s original songs have also been covered by many other notable artists, including Solomon Burke, Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris, Kelly Clarkson, Martina McBride, Bette Midler, Ben Harper, Bon Iver, Linda Ronstadt, Ellie Goulding & Lissie, Melissa Etheridge, Jessica Simpson, Miranda Lambert, Shooter Jennings, and Joan Osborne. Patty Griffin: Silver Bell track listing 1. Little God 2. Truth#2 3. Boston 4. Perfect White Girls 5. Sooner or Later 6. What you Are 7. Silver Bell 8. Fragile 9. Mother of God 10. One More Girl 11. Sorry and Sad 12. Driving 13. Top of the World 14. So Long

If you have recently visited with me at Hootin' Anni's, you know I've not been doing well since the week before Labor Day weekend. I'm still not feeling up to 'par' with my heart rate, but changing back from new meds to the previous meds, I think, it may be working!! So far, the heart rate is stabilizing but still not all normal. Yet! I have confidence it'll become good soon. In the meantime, I haven't gone out in the extreme high heat and high humidity for any birding trips. This post is pre-scheduled for publishing on Saturday, while I hope to be resting comfortably at home. The other day tho, while sitting at the dinning room table, I spotted not one but TWO female Baltimore Orioles visiting the hibiscus blossoms just off the patio!!-----------...come to my window, the blog post title was referring to the Melissa Etheridge song of same title. :o) I realize it has nothing to do with birding/birds, but I like it. Again, this week, as last, I probably will not be feeling up to paying anyone a visit. But know your linking up in the two weeks' time, I appreciate your efforts and loving comments! Hopefully by next week I'll be back to paying more attention to blogging and birding!!Atom 1.0: http://id-rather-b-birdin.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default RSS 2.0: http://id-rather-b-birdin.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default?alt=rss

The anti-gay Judicial Watch has filed a Freedom Of Information lawsuit against the Department Of Justice, demanding to know how much the DOJ paid Melissa Etheridge to appear at a June gay pride-related event attended by hundreds of DOJ lawyers. Here's their press release: Judicial Watch has sued the United States Department of Justice for refusing to turn over information related to the Lavender Law society, a group of gay and transgender Justice Department lawyers. PJ Media reported on “Gay Day at DOJ” in June 2013 when the Justice Department brought singer and “human rights activist” Melissa Etheridge to hold a concert at the Great Hall at the Justice Department building in Washington. Such an event certainly cost the American taxpayers tens of thousands of dollars, even though only a few hundred DOJ lawyers were in attendance.

For those who follow LezGetReal, it might seem kind of odd that our site never really bothers to cover Melissa Etheridge a lot. That probably has to do with the fact that there comes a point where we just can’t stomach her, her ex-partner or their behavior. However, we are saddened by the breakup of Jane Lynch and Lara Embry, especially after Lynch showed up on iCarly, Embry’s daughter’s favorite show at the time. Lynch and Embry married back in 2010, but started the process of getting divorced earlier this past Friday. Unfortunately, even for same-sex couples, divorce happens. Lynch sat down with Larry King to discuss the divorce. At one point, she states “It’s two people who decided it’s better to go apart than stay together” regarding divorce. In recent days, Lynch has had to deal with the death of her Glee co-star Corey Monteith. She has been photographed looking rather stoic, which has always tended to be the case with Lynch when she seems to be in pain. Lynch does note in the following video that she and Embry are remaining friends, and that Haden, Embry’s daughter from a previous relationship, was doing well. Still, she notes that divorce is never easy and stated “We have to remain adults, which we have. We keep everybody — especially Haden’s — good in our mind.” The interview itself appears to be about a month old as it was recorded well before the death of Monteith.
