In a new video feature, Monocle examines the burgeoning retail landscape in Taipei, long overshadowed by flashier regional neighbors like Hong Kong. Video journalist Gabriel Leigh profiles the new retail wave of small shops transforming the city, including the hybrid store ArtYard in Taipei’s west end. Situated in a historical neighborhood once considered the hub of the city’s tea and textile industries, ArtYard sells hand-made ceramics while doubling as a cultural center. Store founder Yi-Cheng Jou comments that his store’s retail concept revolves around the idea that there’s beauty in the objects we put in daily use. It’s a philosophy that the city’s new retail wave has embraced, promoting design, simplicity and utility while rejecting flash and mass market thinking. Considering the competition, it is perhaps the best route for putting Taipei on Asia’s shopping map. Check out the video below. Like designer Daiki Suzuki before him, Mark McNairy infused his own design sensibilities into the Woolrich Woolen Mills label, but without diluting its Americana-centric approach. Now, after five successful seasons, the New York-base designer will be making his exit after the label’s Fall/Winter 2013 Collection presentation later this year. So far, license owner WP Lavori made no announcement on McNairy’s replacement but it is likely to put Woolrich Woolen Mills on hold for a season first. In the meantime, McNairy will have his hands full with his own New Amsterdam private label, Billionaire Boys Club collaboration, a capsule collection with adidas Originals, and footwear designs with Ronnie Fieg. Carhartt WIP and Starter have come together to produce three snapbacks named the Ballwin, College, and the On Track. The Ballwin and the On Track both feature a solid base of the traditional Carhartt brown with the Ballwin featuring the classic Carhartt logo patch and the On Track featuring “Carhartt” in raised embroidery on the front. The College is a two-tone offering made up of a butter colored crown and a wine colored bill. A wine felt patch Carhartt “C” is held down by a single needle top stitch. The Starter logo is featured in it’s traditional area right above the opening in the back of the hat. All three models are currently available at CaliRoots. The Cannes Red Carpet: Worse than rush hour in NYC on a Summer Friday Thanks to the fine folks behind Chivas Regal 25, I’ve been lucky enough to attend the Cannes Film Festival the last two days. In a special themed edition of “Weekend Plans”, I present to you my itinerary for the last day and a half and then some. After leaving on an evening flight from New York City on Wednesday night, I arrive in Nice, France late Thursday morning. After clearing customs, I’m greeted by a Chivas Regal 25 team member and escorted to the car that will take me Cannes. The ride from the airport is one of the more scenic ones I’ve been on, with the mountains of the Ligurian Alps as our backdrop. About 40 minutes later, we arrive in Cannes and I’m dropped off at the iconic Hotel Martinez. The hotel has throngs of people waiting outside for a glimpse of their favorite movie stars (they were not so impressed by yours truly). I head straight to the Chivas Lounge inside the lobby after checking in to receive my official itinerary and make an appointment to get a cut and shave before tonight’s festivities. By 4pm, I’m all suited up in my tuxedo and freshly shorn. Myself and the other press folk meet up in the Chivas Salon 25 for a few group pictures and then enjoy a cocktail in the terrace of the Michelin-starred restaurant, La Palme d’Or. Soon we’ll be walking the Red Carpet of the Palais de Festivals for the premiere of Nebraska by Alexander Payne. After the movie, we head back to the La Palme d’Or for what can only be described as a feat of gastronomic excellence. Paired with custom-made cocktails by Chivas Global Ambassador Max Warner, we dined on a delicious four-course meal that was over way too quickly (though we were properly stuffed by the end). The night ends with more drinks and lots of dancing at the VIP after-party in the Chivas House, as well as a late-night stop at the pop-up location for club Le Baron. Friday is a day of leisure and luxury aboard the Chivas 25 yacht. Some take the boat’s tender out for a spin, while others just bask in the sun and enjoy a few extra Chivas 25 cocktails. After Thursday’s late evening, this is absolutely necessary. The rest of the day is spent walking about Cannes and enjoying the great weather (and food). Then it’s off to bed for my morning trip back to Nice on Saturday to head back to what I hear is a chilly, dreary New York City. Oh boy. I can’t wait.
