First and foremost, I have to shout out my dude Le’Shawn Taylor for hipping me to this beyond-dusty new beat tape from Tampa, Fla.-based producer Phromsopha. Secondly, I kinda/sorta want to apologize for the lack of posts on instrumental releases lately. I’ve been busy with other projects, features, etc… and this has caused me to snooze on joints like Crucially Going Def. If you like to catch a contact high from your beats or are fond of sample flips originating from grimy crates, then you should download this now. Let’s play the Wu-Tang guessing game. When do you think this track was recorded? Son Raw guessed that this is an extra from the early 2000s and judging from the tight verses of Deck and the RZA, that could be accurate. I don’t like dissing people who I would be willing to die for, so let’s not talk about the latter-day output of the Rebel INS and the Rzarecauteur. In fact, this does sound like something from the Digital Bullet era. Raekwon offers us no clues, because the chef has been consistently excellent for a long time. Zilla guessed that this is an extra from the Man with the Iron Fists soundtrack. The Frank Dukes beat would seem to be a dead giveaway, although it could very well feature old vocals transferred to a new beat — one that does a better job of channeling late 90s RZA than modern day RZA. I’m sure someone in the comment section knows the true answer, but it’s more fun to speculate. After all, good new Wu-Tang is no longer the norm, so it’s important to appreciate when the melodies are deadly.

Potholes favorite Lee Bannon slides through today with the release of a haunting new beat tape, Never/mind/the/darkness/of/it. Continuously working on his craft, it is already apparent how far this California producer has come. His new tape is dark, deliberate and perhaps more abstract than anything we have heard from him thus far. Project standout “Rellahmatic” would sit beautifully on a horror film soundtrack, while “NeverMindTheDarknessofit” spins together R&B melodies with ease. 19-year-old Fayetteville, North Carolina producer Skyin’ Soulz recently released his six-track instrumental EP, Golden Soulz. According to Soulz, the tape is inspired by emotions brought to the surface by present-day life occurrences. The tape emanates  a stimulating lustful vibe, particularly evident in “Lovers Paradise,” which I fell in love with on fist listen. Stream Golden Soulz below, you will not be disappointed.

Mike Will is dropping a new beat tape at some point this summer called #FuckVerses. The EP will be all instrumental but will feature a few high profile artists doing hooks. As we reported recently, Ras G just dropped a new beat tape, Raw Fruit, on Leaving Records. And with that announcement came the stream of one of its smoked-out cuts, “Agaveman”. Wasting no time on making sure we know more about what the tape has to offer, Leaving just uploaded another track, “Dumb Down”, that sounds like an alien transmission … if the aliens had laser-esque synthesizer, dub samples, and fuzzed-out bass.
