76 Degrees West Band takes its name from the longtitude for the East Coast of the United States, precisely at Washington, DC. This homegrown group of musicians has been performing their genre-blending brand of R&B, pop, jazz and funk since 2009, and they recently released "Something," a new single with another DMV fave, Raheem DeVaughn, on vocals. DeVaughn flexes his range, rope-a-doping us in with his falsetto before settling into his normal tenor, while 76 Degrees West Band swings around him on this soulful, jazzy track made for two-stepping to. I'm living for the horn section, and the interpolation of the music from Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" on the bridge is a great touch. Raheem DeVaughn and 76 Degrees West Band will definitely make you want to dance when you hear this.

In continuing promotion of her Room For Living EP, Atlanta songstress Marian Mereba takes us on a beautifully mysterious trip in her first video. "Go To London" finds Mereba blending into a myriad of images while singing her soft and sweet tune with her guitar in tow. The bright lights of a skyline, crowded city streets, skydivers and tigers all slowly cross the screen creating a captivating visual for an already magical song. The track itself speaks of two accidental lovers parting ways in order to embark on their own personal journeys. "You said 'Darling can't you see? There's more to you than loving me,'" Mereba sings. Check out this incredible video for yourself, and if you haven't already, be sure to download your copy of Marian Mereba's Room For Living via Bandcamp.

Just when we thought we'd played the brakes off of Omar's "The Man" around SBHQ, the UK soul singer goes and drops some newness right in our laps. "Come On Speak To Me" is the second release lifted from Omar's upcoming album, also titled The Man, and further raises our anticipation of the set. On it, Omar furthers the grown man narrative he started with "The Man," this time utilizing a newfound enlightenment to beckon a potential partner in his general direction. He does this over an elastic groove that swings and sways with the slight air of a samba and compliments his vocal oh so well. While we here give "The Man" some much deserved rest and add "Come On Speak To Me" to our playlists, go ahead and give the track a spin below. You, like us, will be marking the days until June 28th when you do.

Looking for something to immediately bring a smile to your face? Look no further than The Stepkids' jazz cover of Justin Timberlake's "Suit & Tie." Really, there's no need for us to continue discussing this. Described as a "psychedelic soul band," Tim Walsh, Jeff Gitelman and Dan Edinberg are fun, quirky and irresistibly charming, not to mention the fact these dudes can really play. Unfortunately for me, I'd never heard of The Stepkids before this video, but if you'll excuse me, I'm going to put an end to that right now. In the meantime, you press play and enjoy instant gratification, a feeling unlike the one I experienced upon first hearing the original.

It was the "They betta sang!" heard around the world when American Idol finalist Candice Glover teamed up with former Idol contestant Jennifer Hudson to perform Natalie Cole's "Inseparable." As per her usual, Jennifer ripped it up and made me question once again when she'll finally come out with an album on par with her talent. I haven't been following Idol closely, or at all, so I had some concern that Candice was going to get outblown by Ms. Hudson since it's hard to contain that big voice of hers. Maybe that's why Jennifer kept reminding her to sing. For a minute Ms. Hudson had me fooled thinking that she'd forgotten she was singing "Inseparable" and not "And I Am Telling You," but when she brought her run back down to earth instead of knocking it into the rafters like she would have done on the latter tune, I knew she hadn't forgotten a thing at all. Candice declined to engage in a shouting match and proved that she could hold her own against the Weight Watchers spokeswoman, harmonizing quite sweetly with her at the end of the song, earning church-style "go 'head on girl" hand waves and a standing ovation from everyone who had the good sense to recognize true talent when they heard it. It's no wonder then that the South Carolina native took the crown an hour after that performance, earning her own spot in American Idol history.

One of the biggest mysteries of this season of American Idol (besides the weird judging panel) was why Mariah Carey had yet to perform. The woman who basically gave birth to a generation of singers and was recruited to give the show some credibility had not sung a single note all season. With "#Beautiful" rising up the charts and further cementing her legend, we knew that no matter what beef she had with the producers or other judges, she couldn't resist an opportunity to promote her single on Idol. Obviously, Mariah can't make anything simple, so she decided to sing a medley of her chart-topping singles "Vision of Love," Make It Happen," "My All," "Hero," "We Belong Together" and "#Beautiful" in a form-fitting, mermaid-like dress that severely limited her movement. I personally would have preferred to hear more of one or two songs and then "#Beautiful," but it definitely brought back a lot of memories. Mariah's vocals were strong, proving she can still push her voice to places few can. You can definitely tell that she used pre-recorded vocals and a backing track (the sound reverberated in the theater) for a portion of this performance, but it's debatable that she lip-synched the whole deal, as some have suggested. See, Mariah is smart. Just before this performance rumors had surfaced that she was planning a world tour. What better way to promote the new single and a tour than to perform a medley of nostalgia-inducing hits that will leave people wanting more?

It is with some reluctance that I write this post. I never ever ever never thought I'd be writing about Chris Brown. I'd written the kid off a long time ago and refused to acknowledge those parts of my brain that thought it liked some of his songs. Sometimes though, we have to give credit where credit it due. I don't know where "Fine China" came from, but we had no choice but to succumb to its Michael Jackson shaded allure. Given the number of remixes that followed, we weren't the only ones. If DJ Tedsmooth has his way, his will be the one you remember. The immediate head nodder infuses Uptown flavor with even more MJ, making it ready for an appearance at any weekend party you attend. This free download is worthy of a spot in your collection even if it does mean giving Chris Brown a fifth chance.
