When I hear the name “Calatrava” I think of Patek Philippe, and when I think about Patek Philippe I think about tradition. Tradition in the sense of a watch means a lot of things. It usually implies timeless design, and often a retention of values that your father or grandfather would have probably recognized. ... read more »The article Patek Philippe Calatrava 5227 Hands-On: A Perfect Daily Dress Watch first appeared on A BLOG TO WATCH and was written by Ariel Adams.

The first watch we are previewing for the September 2013 Only Watch event is this Patek Philippe Ref 5004T.  The Patek Philippe Ref 5004 is a split-seconds chronograph + perpetual calendar; it was produced for about six years, until being replaced by the Patek Ref 5204 in 2011.  The piece you see here is the first and likely only time that the Patek Ref 5004 will be created in a titanium case.  More broadly, however, is that this is the fourth Patek Philippe EVER to be cased in titanium, according to my research.   I revealed two of them here on Perpetuelle a couple years ago — the Patek Philippe Calatrava Ref5180T and the Calatrava Ref 6000T (see Two Titanium Patek Philippe’s You Didn’t Know Existed); and my knowledgeable friends at Monochrome also pointed out that the Patek Nautilus, Ref 5712T, was also cased in titanium — made for Only Watch 2007, fittingly. Patek trivia aside, let’s take a closer look at this 5004T.  Click through to read and see more © Perpetuelle, 2013. | Serving Up New Luxury and Avant-Garde Timepieces Daily. More Patek Philippe

“Only Watch” is a biennial charity auction of one-of-a-kind watches created by many of the most renowned watch brands in Switzerland.  This exceptional event is held every two years in Monaco during the Monaco Yacht Show and is under the patronage of HSH Prince Albert II.   All the proceeds from Only Watch go to support Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy research which is why many of these watches go extraordinarily high prices.  This year’s event is September 28, 2013, and the auction will be conducted by Antiquorum. Starting today Perpetuelle will begin its coverage of Only Watch 2013 — now the third year in which we have covered this noble event (review my Only Watch 2011 coverage here, and my limited coverage from the 2009 event here, or view my Only Watch stream ordered by date, here).  For 2013, 38 of the world’s leading watch manufactures will each donate a timepiece specially created for the occasion.  As is the tradition, each piece that is donate is one-of-a-kind. Stay tuned in because over the next few months, you will get to see some superb “unique” watches from each of the participating brands for the 2013 event.   The master list will be posted here and updated regularly.  You can also read more at http://www.onlywatch.com/ © Perpetuelle, 2013. | Serving Up New Luxury and Avant-Garde Timepieces Daily. Written by Chaz NashHublot presented its second Antikythera mechanism watch this year, the Antikythera SunMoon; and as complex as it may appear upon first glance, well, it’s all Greek.Hublot Tribute to Antikythera Mechanism WatchHublot returned to Baselworld this year with a sleek and streamlined Antikythera SunMoon watch which is more stunning than the first Antikythera mechanism inspired timepiece presented last year. Hublot manufactured the four piece limited edition tributary Antikythera mechanism timepiece last year, and dared to venture yet again with another production of the inspirational Antikythera mechanism in Antikythera SunMoon.Explaining the technical functions of Antikythera SunMoon is a bit of an overwhelming process, however the basic gist of this incredible watch is that it not only provides the time of day, it is also capable of determining the solar year of any given day, the phase of the Moon, it’s shape in the sky on that given day as well as the name of the constellation behind the Moon.Antikythera SunMoon features both Sun and Moon indications and has 295 components with seven functions. Functions include a both solar and lunar calendar, and indications displaying the sidereal position of the Sun and the Moon, which allows not only the ability to accurately read time, but also the ability to determine the phase of the moon, its shape, the constellations behind it, and the time required for the moon (and sun) to pass through the constellations.Antikythera SunMoon has a distinctive square-shaped case with an incorporated circular dial. It features a flying tourbillon, without ball bearing, which rotates once every minute to indicate the seconds, with the hours and minutes shown by traditional hands at the center of the movement on the dial side. It has a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour (3 Hz) and also has an extensive 120-hour power reserve.Antikythera SunMoon’s movement has two winding crowns at 3 o’clock and 9 o’clock. The crown at 3 o’clock is for winding and setting time. The first position winds the movement’s mainspring, and the second position sets both hours and minutes in both directions. The second crown at 9 o’clock has only one position which is used to scroll through the lunisolar calendar in both directions.Seems like quite a bit of information for just one watch, however, this information merely scratches the fusion of the technically engineered surface of Antikythera SunMoon complications. Antikythera SunMoon is a limited edition timepiece of only 20 pieces and as such will not be available for long. For more information about Antikythera SunMoon visit Hublot’s website.
