A new, and most definitely welcome trend in modern horology is something Frederique Constant likes to call: "Affordable Luxury." What that meant during the past 20 or so years is the expansion of a new market of timepieces built to high-end quality and aesthetic standards and equipped with fine mechanical movements. The watch on review today is the FC-710MC4H6 Classics Manufacture and it was created with this very sentiment in mind...... read more »The article Frederique Constant FC-710MC4H6 Classics Manufacture Watch Review first appeared on A BLOG TO WATCH and was written by David Bredan.

At Baselworld a couple months ago I sat down with Alpina and was taken through their 2013 lineup.  They presented an attractive collection, led by a couple of nice heritage pieces (i.e. modern day interpretations of historical pieces) that I will show you before long, as well as a nice variety of new models across three of their lifestyle-themed collections:  Aviation, Diving and Sailing.  The watches I want to comment on today are the new Startimer Pilot Chronograph Big Date models, part of the Alpina Aviation collection. 2013 will be the fifth time that Piaget has submitted a unique piece for auction in the Only Watch charity event.  Certainly not of the most “unique unique” pieces this year, Piaget’s piece is nonetheless one I am very fond of — a Piaget Altiplano Skeleton, in 38mm white gold case with black PVD treatment.  For the first time we see the Altiplano Skeleton white gold case treated to a black PVD finish — what little of the actual case is left on this ultra-thin, openworked beauty, that is.  Having spent plenty of time hands-on with the regular production model (see my in-depth report here), I think this unique piece must look great with the black case. Earlier this year, Bert and I went on a horological trip to Switzerland and visited the OMEGA museum in Biel. One of the people from the museum showed us a number of Speedmasters that they had on archive (that is: not displayed in the museum). One of them was this very early Speedmaster 105.003 also known as the 3rd generation of Speedmaster pre-Professional model. We zoom into this OMEGA Speedmaster pre-Professional with reference number 105.003!The post Speedy Tuesday – OMEGA Speedmaster pre-Professional 105.003 appeared first on Fratellowatches - Opinions on watches, watch reviews, watch stories & industry news.

Powerlite is a neat sounding name for an industrial alloy that Maurice Lacroix borrowed for their new Pontos S Extreme collection. I personally can’t attest to the “extreme” nature of the material (or watch), but it is an interesting metal that offers a pleasant tactile experience and light feel. It also apparently comes in blue. We go hands-on with a Maurice Lacroix’s new sporty chronograph collection for 2013.... read more »The article Maurice Lacroix Pontos S Extreme Watch In Cool Colors first appeared on A BLOG TO WATCH and was written by Ariel Adams.

Today RJ unveiled the Moon Orbiter Tourbillon, a very original piece including a flying tourbillon.   In a limited edition of 25-pieces at $115,000 per, I find a lot to like in this watch.  Most importantly, it builds on the brand’s strength which is its “DNA of legends” theme.  The overall design is resoundingly avant-garde and highly original.  The dial has moon dust incorporated into it — thereby evolving the intergalactic theme which the brand has built several pieces around (and yes this makes it part of the Moon-DNA collection).
